Where Should a Beginner Witch Start? The Answer Might Surprise You
It’s one of the most common questions I see from new witches online.
Where do I start? What should I learn first? How do I know if I’m doing it right?
The answer I’m going to give you might be a little different from what you’ve read elsewhere. Because I don’t think you’re starting from zero. I think you’re remembering.
You Already Know More Than You Think
Here’s something I believe deeply, and it shapes everything I teach in Witch School.
Every single person is born with the same innate abilities. The ability to see and hear spirits. The ability to hear our Lord’s voice. Intuition. The ability to sense and move energy. Even a certain limited awareness of who we were in past lives.
These aren’t rare gifts reserved for special people. They’re part of being human.
But somewhere along the way, for most of us, that knowledge gets knocked out of us. A child tells their parent they see someone in the corner of the room and gets told firmly — no, there’s nobody there. A child mentions a memory from another life and gets shut down before they can finish the sentence. Over and over, well-meaning caregivers — no offense intended, because they were only doing what they knew — teach us to stop trusting what we sense and start trusting only what we can prove.
By the time most of us reach adulthood, those abilities are still there. They’re just buried under years of being told they aren’t real.
Coming to Wicca isn’t really learning something new. It’s remembering something old. It’s uncovering what was always there and learning to trust it again.
So Where Do You Actually Start?
The very first step is understanding what Wicca and witchcraft actually are — clearly, honestly, without the Hollywood filter. What this path is, what it isn’t, what it asks of you, and what it offers in return.
From there, the work is about gradually reclaiming what was lost. Through reading, through practice exercises, through showing up consistently and giving those buried abilities room to breathe again.
It takes time. It takes patience. And it takes a willingness to trust yourself again — which, for a lot of us, is the hardest part.
Why Everyone Wants to Skip Straight to Spellwork
I understand the impulse completely.
Most people come to Wicca with a mission. Something they want to change, heal, attract, or release. And when you have a mission, learning feels like it’s standing between you and what you need. Who has time for foundations when there’s something urgent at stake?
But here’s what I’ve seen again and again: spellwork won’t be successful until the basics are learned. And trying to skip ahead usually just leads to frustration and the quiet conclusion that magic doesn’t work — when really, the tools just weren’t ready yet.
Just saying some words and pointing your finger is only a small part of what a spell really is.
Spellwork takes genuine intention and focus. It takes the ability to quiet the noise and listen beyond it. It takes a strengthened intuition that you actually trust. And it takes relationships — with the elements, with spirits, with deity — that can support and amplify what you’re trying to do.
Without those foundations, you’re essentially trying to build a house without knowing how to use the tools. The materials are there, but the results are going to be unpredictable at best.
Why the Basics Actually Matter
Let me be specific about what I mean by basics, because it’s more than just reading about the elements or memorizing deity names.
Learning to work with the elements means developing a real relationship with Earth, Air, Fire, and Water — understanding what each one feels like, how each one moves through you, and how to call on that energy intentionally. That takes practice. Repeated, consistent practice.
Building relationships with spirits and deity means showing up — regularly, sincerely, with gratitude and openness — and allowing those relationships to develop over time the way any real relationship does. You wouldn’t ask a stranger for a significant favor. The same principle applies here.
And strengthening your intuition means learning to hear that quiet inner voice clearly enough to trust it — which means first getting quiet enough to hear it at all. In a world full of noise, that’s a skill that has to be deliberately cultivated.
These aren’t obstacles between you and real magic. They are the magic. Everything else builds on top of them.
This Is Exactly What Witch School Teaches
When I designed the Wicca Made Simple Witch School curriculum, this is the philosophy I built it on.
Each monthly set of lessons focuses on a particular topic — moving through the foundations in a logical, supportive sequence. Every lesson includes reading for understanding and several practice exercises to help you actually develop the skills, not just read about them.
Because practice makes perfect. And remembering those buried abilities takes repetition. It takes showing up month after month and doing the work — not perfectly, but consistently.
The students I’ve watched grow the most in their practice are the ones who trusted the process. Who didn’t rush. Who gave themselves permission to move at the pace the learning actually required.
A Word If You’re Feeling Overwhelmed
If you’re new to this path and feeling like there’s too much to learn, like everyone else seems further along than you, like you’ll never really get there — I want you to hear this directly.
It takes time. And it’s like that for everyone. No one becomes a successful witch in a day, or a week, or even a month. The learning is gradual, the remembering is gradual, and the growth is gradual.
Just don’t ever think you are behind. You are right where you should be. 🌿
