The Witch’s Dilemma: A Story of Choice & Consequence
Because ethics are easiest to understand when they’re real.
Theories are helpful. Principles are powerful. But nothing teaches like lived experience.
That’s why this section offers a real (or blended) story of ethical tension—one of those moments when the “right” choice wasn’t clear, and the Rede or Rule of Three had to be wrestled with in practice.
Use this story as an example, a reflection tool, and an invitation to think about how you might respond when things get ethically complicated.
A Spell for Protection—or for Control?
A few years ago, a dear friend of mine was in a toxic relationship. Her partner was emotionally manipulative, unpredictable, and draining her spirit. She didn’t see it clearly at the time—but I did. And I wanted to help.
I considered doing a spell to break them up.
I told myself it was for her safety. That it was “white magic.” That it wouldn’t really hurt anyone—it would just give her the clarity to walk away.
But the more I sat with it, the more something inside me pulled back.
Yes, I wanted her to be safe.
But I also wanted to feel powerful. To feel like I could fix it.
And if I was honest, a part of me didn’t fully trust her choices.
That realization stopped me.
What I Considered:
- Intention: My desire to protect was real—but so was my urge to control the outcome.
- Impact: What if the spell created more chaos instead of resolution? What if it backfired on her emotionally, or made her feel betrayed if she found out?
- Consent: She hadn’t asked for help. I hadn’t told her what I was planning.
- The Rede: Would this spell harm someone? Possibly. Even if he was harmful himself.
- The Rule of Three: Would the energy of interference return to me? Was I casting from fear or trust?
What I Chose:
Instead of casting the breakup spell, I did something simpler:
I created a clarity candle and lit it with the intention:
“May she see clearly. May she know her worth. May she find strength, in perfect love and perfect trust.”
Then I stepped back.
A month later, she called me crying.
She had left him—on her own.
And she said, “I don’t know what shifted, but something just… clicked.”
What I Learned:
- Ethics are not about being “right”—they’re about being in right relationship with energy, Spirit, and the people you love.
- Sometimes the hardest choice is to hold space and trust another’s path.
- Magic is most powerful when it supports sovereignty—not when it overrides it.
- The Rede doesn’t always give you a clear yes or no—but it always leads you inward, to reflection, to growth, to integrity.
When faced with an ethical dilemma, don’t just ask: “What will work?”
Ask: “What honors everyone’s dignity, including my own?”
