Shadow Work: Reclaiming Self-Trust

Shadow Work Exercise

“Why Don’t I Trust Myself?”

A gentle exploration of self-doubt, past wounds, and the path back to inner wisdom

Every witch must eventually ask: Why is it so hard to trust my own knowing?

Because even as you study magic and energy…

Even as you practice grounding, spellwork, and intuition…

A quiet voice may still whisper: “What if I’m wrong? What if I’m not enough?”

This is where shadow work begins.

The Roots of Self-Doubt

Distrust in your own energy or intuition doesn’t come out of nowhere.

It’s often the result of:

  • Childhood invalidation: Being told your feelings or instincts were “too much,” “wrong,” or “imaginary”
  • Religious conditioning: Being taught that inner wisdom is dangerous or forbidden
  • Past life memory: Energetic echoes of persecution, exile, or magical trauma
  • Ancestral trauma: Inherited fears from generations who had to hide, suppress, or survive
  • Cultural messaging: Systems that reward obedience, conformity, or intellect over intuition

If your doubt feels bigger than this lifetime, it may be. And it deserves compassion.

Journal Prompts for Gentle Shadow Work

Set a sacred space. Breathe. Be soft with yourself.

Explore the following:

  • When was the first time I remember feeling like my intuition “didn’t count”?
  • Who taught me to second-guess myself—and why?
  • What part of me is afraid to be powerful? Why?
  • What would it feel like to forgive myself for past “mistakes” and choose trust now?
  • What would I say to the younger version of me who first learned to doubt?

You are not broken.

You are remembering.

Optional Ritual: Reclaiming the Voice Within

  • Light a black candle for release and a white candle for truth
  • Speak aloud: “I release the voices that are not mine. I honor the wisdom I carry. I call my knowing home.”
  • Sit in silence and let whatever emotion arises be witnessed
  • End by placing your hand on your heart and saying: “I trust myself more today than I did yesterday.”

Why This Matters

Until you address the energetic roots of your self-doubt, your magic may always feel wobbly or fragile. Shadow work isn’t about blaming the past. It’s about healing it—so you can fully reclaim your power.

You are not just remembering spells.

You’re remembering who you were before the world told you not to trust yourself.

And that… is where the magic begins.
